Organic food is not a fad, a phase nor a special diet. It is what we should be feeding ourselves, our children and our people every day and it should NOT be any different to how we feed our pets at home. Why should we be feeding our pets so contrastingly different, when we have access to fresh food while they have access to processed food? Health is an investment, not an expense!
What's happening to all of our food today? We share one planet but yet among ourselves are ingenious beings who are unaware on how our day-to-day decisions revolve around the marketing ploy of multi-billion dollar organizations that are also the root causes of depleting our planet's natural resources and nutrients for money.
How did we come about to believe that pets should be eating processed food sold commercially? Have you found yourself automatically assuming that you need to go pick up pet food in a pet store? James Spratt was a genius in 1860 when he learnt that food wastage can be converted into commercially-available food for pets! Today, pet owners are spoilt for choices to choose what food goes inside their dogs' and cats' stomach - from low grade to premium grades, and those of human food grades using "real and whole" ingredients. At the end of the day, they are still processed and available in pellet, kibble, canned, well in any form that can last longer in the package. These are, at the end of the day, processed food, which equals to, no longer fresh.
So why organic?
Our health is an investment, not an expense. Majority of the ingredients that we pick up from our local grocery stores are from farms that practices the use of chemicals or GMOs to protect their crops and livestocks from pests and illnesses. If we picture the foodchain diagram, it is terrifying to learn that we are also consuming and feeding our families the meat of animals (chicken, pork, beef, lamb, fish) and crops (fruits and veggies) that contains those chemicals (i.e. syntethic and artifically-produced pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, etc.). It is no wonder we are facing an increased amount of people and animals having food allergies, diseases, accelerated aging and even cancers in today's society. We are keeping the doctors and veterinarians indeed busy with problems that can be resolved at home just by choosing organic (and of course, switching to a healthier diet).
Did you know that organic have more nutrition than non-organic food as well? Studies have revealed that organic foods have more nutrients, particularly vitamin C, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and fewer heavy metals and nitrates compared to non-organic foods [refer to note 1]. While organic ingredients will increase your weekly grocery expenditure, it is a health investment that we should be willing to spend instead of paying veterinary bills.
There are an increasing amount of businesses that specializes in providing fresh organic ingredients today - please do support them so that they can continue to help me, you, your children, your parents and your pets at home live a longer, healthier and illness-free lives!
